The Los Angeles Chargers used a big 17 point second quarter to pull away from the Boston Patriots. Propelling them to a 24-14 win and the 1960 AFL Title in the process.
The first quarter was scoreless. The only near scoring chance came for the Chargers, but Ben Agajanian missed a 37 yard field goal attempt. After holding the Patriots and forcing a punt, the Chargers then broke through on their next possession. On the first play of the second quarter, Jack Kemp tossed a short one yard pass to Dave Kocourek for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Again Boston had to punt and the Chargers struck again quickly on the first play of their next possession. Jack Kemp connected on a long 57 yard TD pass to Don Norton and in the span of a minute and a half the Chargers put up 14 points.
Things went from bad to worse for Boston when Alan Miller fumbled on the first play of their next possession. Doyle Nix recovered for the Chargers at the Patriot 34 yard line. The Chargers turned that into an 18 yard Agajanian field goal and it was now 17-0. The Patriots managed to avoid even more trouble on the next series. Butch Songin fumbled and John Kompara recoverd for L.A. again at the Patriot 34 yard line. However this time the Patriot defense held and Agajanian missed a 40 yard attempt keeping the score at 17-0.
The miss breathed some life into Boston and they got back in the game on a 27 yard TD run by Dick Christy. Halftime came and things looked a lot better for the Patriots only being down 17-7 instead of 20 or 24 to nothing.
In the third quarter the game became a defensive struggle as neither team came close to scoring and the Chargers took their 17-7 lead into the fourth quarter.
Halfway through the fourth, Boston was called on Gino Cappelletti for a 31 yard field goal attempt. The kick would bring Boston to within a touchdown, but it was blocked. The Chargers took advantage of the big play and marched right down the field. Kemp tossed his third touchdown of the day, this one to Ralph Anderson with 4:24 to play, giving L.A. a 24-7 lead. The Patriots did manage a last minute score on a Songin to Oscar Lofton 28 yard TD pass to make the final score 24-14.
