Green Bay and Cleveland ushered in the decade of the sixties with terrific NFL Championship game. It was a thrilling game that saw Green Bay come out on top 20-17.
The game did not start out with the makings of a classic. There were three fumbles in the first seven plays of the game. The Packers got the ball first and Paul Hornung fumbled to give the Browns the ball at the Packer 43 yard line. Three plays later Gern Nagler fumbled on the Green Bay 11 yard line. But, just two plays later Jim Taylor fumbled, giving the ball back to the Browns at the Packer 26 yard line. Cleveland was able to convert that turnover into three points on a 26 yard Sam Baker field goal giving them a 3-0 lead.
The Packers righted themselves on their next possession and Paul Hornung scored on a two yard run to put Green Bay in front 7-3. That would be the score at the end of the first quarter.
Green Bay upped their lead to 10-3 on a Hornung field goal early in the second. It stayed that score until with less than five minutes to play in the half, Milt Plum was intercepted by Bill Forester at the Cleveland 18 yard line. Forester's return set the Packers up at the 13 yard line. The Brown's defense held and forced Hornung into another field goal. His 16 yard kick was good and the Packers took a 13-3 lead into half time.
Cleveland received the second half kick and Plum marched the Browns right down the field in their best drive of the game so far. His 13 yard TD pass to Ray Renfro cut the Packers lead to 13-10. The Browns forced Green Bay to punt and Plum again moved Cleveland right down the field. This time Jim Brown capped the drive with a one yard run and Cleveland now found themselves on top 17-13 as the game headed to the fourth quarter.
Cleveland's lead only lasted a little longer than two minutes. Bart Starr connected with Boyd Dowler for a 15 yard TD pass putting the Packers back on top 20-17. Neither team could do much with ball for most of the rest of the quarter. Cleveland got the ball back with 4:37 to play in the game at their own 32 yard line. They reached the Packers 47 yard line with 1:54 to play, but then a huge sack by Bill Quinlan pushed the Browns back. On 4th and eight, Plum's last pass was picked off by Jesse Whittenton to seal the game. The Packers ran out the clock and then ran off the field champions of 1960.
MVP: Boyd Dowler (GNB): 4 catches, 89yds, TD
