AFL Championship - Houston Oilers at New York Jets
January 3rd, 1970 at Shea Stadium, Temp 22, Cloudy, Wind 19 mph
The third time was the charm for the New York Jets. They finally get over the hump of the AFL Championship game and find their way to the Super Bowl. Appearing in their third straigh AFL Championship game, the Jets shutout the Houston Oillers 29-0 to claim the AFL crown.
The first quarter was tight as Jim Turner's 37 yard field goal were the only points scored. Early in the second quarter the Oilers had a drive going but Cornell Gordon intercepted Pete Beathard and returned it 64 yards to the Oilers 12 yard line. Namath tossed a 4 yard TD pass to Don Maynard to make it 10-0. Turner later kicked another field goal and it was 13-0 at the half. Turner kicked two more field goals in the third quarter while the Jets defense smothered the Oilers. It was 19-0 heading to the final quarter.
