1971 Season
1971 - Baltimore Orioles World Champions.
My 1971 baseball replay is in the books. All four real life division winners repeated in my Replay. Baltimore ran away with the AL East by 18 games over Boston. Oakland won the AL West by 6 games over Kansas City. Pittsburgh was able to hold off a surprising New York Mets team to win the NL East by just 3 games. The Mets won 104 games, but that still wasn't good enough. Lastly the San Francisco Giants took the NL west by 11 games over Cincinnati.
In the post season, Baltimore handled Oakland with relative ease, winning the AL Pennant three games to one. It was the National League that provided the drama and upset. The San Francisco Giants rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 series deficits to win the NL Pennant three games to two over Pittsburgh. The World Series wasn't quite as exciting as the Orioles cruised to a 4-1 World Series victory.
The AL MVP was Reggie Smith (.323-23-127). AL Cy Young winner was Jim Palmer (30-6, 1.70, 214 K, 10 shutouts and 3 ten strikeout games).
The NL MVP was Willie Stargell (.298-54-150, 8 multi homer games). NL Cy Young winner was Tom Seaver (22-10, 1.82, 274 K, 9 shutouts 11 ten strikeout or more games).
Here is how the replay compared to real life in some basic categories:
The AL had a .240 AVG (.247 Real), .310 OBP (.317 Real), .357 SLG (.364 Real), .667 OPS (.681 Real), 7532 Runs (72931 Real), 1533 HR (1484 Real), 3.48 ERA (3.47 Real), .980 FLD (.980 Real)
The NL had a .244 AVG (.252 Real), .306 OBP (.316 Real), .360 SLG (.366 Real), .666 OPS (.683 Real), 7413 Runs (7601 Real), 1439 HR (1379 Real), 3.36 ERA (3.47 Real), .979 FLD (.979 Real)
