The Kansas City Chiefs jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and used that margin to defeat the visiting Buffalo Bills 34-24 and claim the spot in Super Bowl I as the AFL representatives.
The Chiefs looked like they were going to have an easy afternoon after the first quarter, but the Bill hung in there, eventually tying the game at 24-24 in the third quarter. Mike Mercer's 13 yard field goal and a 13 yard touchdown pass from Len Dawson to Otis Taylor built the Chiefs early 10-0 lead. Dawson threw his second touchdown pass of the game early in the second quarter, this time to Bert Coan to make it a 17-0 game. Buffalo finally got their offense going and Jack Spikes ran for a 14 yard touchdown. After Mike Stratton intercepted Dawson, Booth Lusteg kicked a 26 yard field goal to make it 17-10. With less than two minutes remaining in the half Dawson threw his third touchdown pass, a one yard toss to Mike Garrett to make it 24-10. The Bills wouldn't go quietly into halftime as Jack Kemp connected on a 22 yard scoring strike to Bobby Burnett. At the half it was 24-17 Chiefs. The defenses made their adjustments and both offenses struggled in the third quarter. However it was Buffalo that did the only scoring as Burnett ran in from one yard out to tie the game at 24-24 heading to the fourth quarter. Mercer kicked a 25 yard field goal to put the Chiefs back on top 27-24. After forcing a Bills three and out, Dawson hooked up with Garrett again on an 18 yard touchdown pass.
