1992 NCAA Tournament
The 1992 Tournament was based on the final AP rankings. Last year's champion Nebraska made it to the elite eight before losing to Syracuse. There were three first round upsets. #9 Stanford over #8 Georgia, #14 Nebraska over #3 Miami,FL and #10 Florida over #7 Texas A&M.
National Semi Final #1 (Stanford Cardinal at Notre Dame Fighting Irish)

The Stanford Cardinal went into South Bend and handled the home team fighting Irish 21-10 to advance to their first ever championship game.
The Stanford defense shut out the Irish in the first half while they received touchdowns from Glyn Milburn in the first quarter and Ellery Roberts in the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead into the locker room. Craig Hentrich kicked a 46 yd field goal to get the Irish on the board on their opening drive of the second half. Late in the third Steve Stenstrom threw a 3 yd touchdown pass to Mike Cook to push Stanford's lead up to 21-3. On the ensuing drive the Irish found paydirt for the first time as Jerome Bettis ran in from two yards out to make it 21-10 heading to the fourth quarter. The final quarter was all defense as Stanford milked the clock and their defense smothered the Irish. National Semi Final #2 (Syracuse Orangemen at Florida St Seminoles)

The Syracue Orangemen raced out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and then coasted the rest of the way to a 24-9 win over the Florida State Seminoles. The win sends them to their first ever championship game and assures that there will be a new first time champion.
The Seminoles didn't seem ready from the opening kick. On the opening kick Kirby Dar Dar returned it 92 yards for an opening score. On the ensuing kick to FSU, Tamarick Vanover fumble the return and Ousmane Bary recovered for the Orangemen. Six plays later Marvin Graves threw a 9 yard touchdown pass to Quadry Ismail to make it 14-0 four minutes into the game. After an FSU punt, Syracuse scored again on a five yard run by Marcus Lee. 21-0 Orangemen and the 'Noles were stunned beyond repair. Charlie Ward tossed an 8 yard touchdown pass to Kez McCorvey, but Dan Mowrey missed the extra point, 21-6. There was no scoring in the third quarter. In the fourth, Pat O'Neill kicked a 50 yd field goal to put Syracuse up 24-6. Mowrey later kicked a field goal for the 'Noles to make the final 24-9. National Championship (Stanford Cardinal v Syracuse Orangemen)

The Syracuse Orangemen built a 14-0 lead and then held off Stanford 24-17 to win their first ever tournament championship.
Marvin Graves scrambled for a 23 yard touchdown run in the first quarter to make it 7-0. Al Wooten ran in from 3 yards out in the second quarter to make it 14-0. With 47 seconds left in the first half Steve Stenstrom snuck in from a yard out on 4th and goal to make it a 14-7 game. Syracuse would score the only points of the third quarter when Graves again scrambled and ran in 14 yards for a touchdown. The Orangemen had a 21-7 lead heading to the final quarter. Pat O'Neill kicked a 25 yard field goal to extend the Orangemen's lead to 24-7 with just under 12 minutes to play. Stanford closed the gap on their next drive with a Steve Stenstrom to Mike Cook 3 yard touchdown pass. After forcing a Syracuse punt Stanford got the ball back but Stenstrom was picked off by Tony Jones at the Syracuse 35 yard line. Syracuse burned off some clock and punted back to Stanford with just 1:22 remaining. Eric Abrams kicked a 53 yard field goal to get them to within one score, but their onside kick attempt with six seconds left failed. The Orangemen win the 1992 tournament.
