AFL Championship - New York Jets at Oakland Raiders
December 31st, 1967 at Oakland-Alameda County Stadium
The Oakland Raider's offense was just too potent for the New York Jets to keep up with as the Raiders used a big second half to pull away from the Jets 43-21 and advance to Super Bowl II.
The Raiders jumped out to a 14-0 lead only to see the Jets rally to tie the game at 14-14 in the second quarter. However by the time halftime came the Raiders had built up a 23-14 lead and then dominated the second half to win the game. Daryle Lamonica tossed an 11 yard touchdown pass to Billy Cannon on the opening drive of the game. On the Raiders next drive Roger Hagberg scored on a five yard run to make it 14-0. Joe Namath then rallied the Jets to tie the game as the Raiders turned the ball over twice in row. First Johnny Sample intercepted Lamonica to set up a Namath to Sauer one yard touchdown pass. Hageberg then fumbled on the next Raider drive and Namath again tossed a TD pass to Sauer to tie the game at 14-14. George Blanda kicked two field goals to make it 20-14 Raiders. Then, just before halftime Blanda kicked anothere field goal, this one from 40 yards out and it was 23-14 at the half. Hagberg ran in his second score of the game to make it 30-14 and Blanda kicked another field goal to make it 33-14 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter Lamonica threw a touchdown pass to Bill J. Miller and Blanda added another field goal to make it 43-14. NFL Championship - Dallas Cowboys at Baltimore Colts
December 31st, 1967 at Memorial Stadium...Temp 45, Cloudy, Wind 6 mph
In a tight defensive struggle the Baltimore Colts withstood a frantic fourth quarter comeback attempt by the Dallas Cowboys to win 13-10 and advance to play the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl II.
Neither team was able to put points on the board in the first quarter and it wasn't until midway through the second that the first points were scored. Johnny Unitas tossed a short three yard scoring pass to Tom Matte to put the Colts up 7-0. Baltimore kicker Lou Michaels had a 43 yard field goal try on the last play of the half, but it was no good and we went to halftime with the 7-0 score. The Colts received the second half kick and this time Michaels came through with a 24 yard field goal to make it 10-0. He'd later kick his third field goal of the game to bump the Colts lead up to 13-0 heading to the fourth quarter. With just under six minutes left in the game the Cowboys got their first points of the game when Harold Deters kicked a 34 yard field goal. The Colts then went three and out and the Cowboys found the end zone for the first time when Craig Morton tossed an 18 yard touchdown pass to Dan Reeves. It was now 13-10 with just 1:51 left in the game. Dallas tried an onside kick but Baltimore recovered and was then able to run out the clock. Second World Championship Game (Super Bowl II) - Oakland Raiders vs Baltimore Colts
January 14th, 1968 at The Orange Bowl...Temp 68, Cloudy, Wind 7 mph
It didn't take long for the AFL to claim their first world championship. In just the second ever NFL/AFL championship game, the Oakland Raiders defeated the Baltimore Colts 19-15 to grab the championship crown.
It was a well played, tight contest throughout. The Raiders didn't show up with a case of the jitters like Kansas City did the year before. The Raiders received the opening kick off and went right down the field against the Colts. George Blanda kicked a 21 yard field goal and just three minutes into the game the Raiders were up 3-0. After forcing the Colts to go three and out the Raiders got the ball back and again went right down the field. This time they found paydirt as Daryle Lamonica tossed a 15 yard scoring pass to Billy Cannon. With five minuets left in the opening quarter the Raiders were up 10-0. The Colts got on the board on their next drive as Lou Michaels kicked a 45 yard field goal to make it 10-3. Then on the last play of the quarter Lamonica made a horrible mistake and was intercepted by Lenny Lyles. Lyles returned the pick down to the Oakland 16 yard line setting up the Colts offense with great field position to start the second quarter. Johnny Unitas didn't waste the opportunity and he threw a 16 yard touchdown pass to W. Ray Perkins on the second play of the second quarter. However, thee reliable Michaels missed the extra point and the Raiders stayed in front 10-9. Blanda later kicked a 27 yard field goal and at the half Oakland led the game 13-9. Blanda then kicked two field goals in the third quarter and the Colts offense sputtered. Heading to the fourth quarter the Raiders had a 19-9 lead. On the opening drive of the fourth quarter Michaels missed a long 55 yard field goal attempt. After an Oakland punt, Unitas capped off a Baltimore scoring drive with a two yard pass to Willie Richardson. Inexplicably Michaels again missed the extra point. The score was now 19-15 and the Colts now needed a field goal to win. There was just 3:39 remaining in the game. The Colts would get the ball twice in the final minutes and each time the Raiders stopped them on desperation fourth down tries. With seven seconds left the Raiders snapped the ball for the last time and the game was over. MVP: Clem Daniels (OAK): Rushing: 136 yards, Receiving: 4 catches, 75 yards For Oakland: Lamonica 19/32, 279, TD, INT...Daniels 136 yards rushing...Dixon 83 yards receiving... For Baltimore: Unitas 15/35, 186, 2 TD...Matte 38 yards rushing...Richardson 42 yards receiving, TD...Ray Perkins 42 yards receiving, TD...Shinnick 10 tackles... |
