AFC Championship - Cincinnati Bengals at Miami Dolphins
January 23rd, 1983 at The Orange Bowl...Temp 77, Partly Cloudy Wind 8 mph
In a style of game nobody saw coming, the Miami Dolphins edged the Cincinnati Bengals 6-3 to win the AFC crown and advance to Super Bowl 17.
All of the scoring (three field goals) came in the first half of the game. The Bengals took the opening kick and marched down the field, settling for a 34 yard field goal by Jim Breech. They had no way of knowing that would be their only points of the game. Miami answered with a 47 yard field goal by Uwe von Schamann on their first possession and the game was tied at 3-3. The Bengals next drive was ended when Ken Anderson was intercepted by Don McNeal and the game headed to the second quarter. Miami failed to capitalize on the interception as von Schamann missed a 40 yard field goal try. The next Bengal drive again ended in a turnover when Cris Collinsworth fumbled at the Miami 30 yard line. The Dolphins then went on a long 16 play drive that ended on another field goal attempt. von Schamann was good from 25 yards and the Dolphins took a 6-3 lead into halftime. Late in the third quarter after an exchange of punts, von Schamann was called on for another kick for Miami. His 41 yard try was no good and the score remained 6-3. In the fourth quarter Cincy got the ball back with 12:22 to play. They reached the Miami 43 yard line and on 4th and four opted to punt away instead of going for it. Miami took over at their own 14 yard line and 7:07 on the clock. The Dolphins used a 14 play drive to chew up six minutes of game time. They punted to Cincy and the Bengals got the ball on their own 18 yard line and just 56 seconds left to play. The Bengals picked up one first down but a sack and two penalties all but ended their chances. One last long pass from Anderson fell incomplete and the Dolphins were headed to the Super Bowl. MVP: Gerald Small (MIA): 5 tackles, 1 forced fumble For Cincinnati: Ken Anderson 21/32, 180 yds, 1 INT...Pete Johnson 52 yds rushing, 5 rec, 24 yds...Dan Ross 4 rec 34 yds...Cris Collinsworth 3 rec, 65 yds...Louis Breeden 10 tackles For Miami: David Woodley 16/22, 109 yds...Andra Franklin 61 yds rushing...Joe Rose 3 rec, 18 yds rec...Jimmy Cefalo 2 rec, 38 yds rec...Don McNeal 1 INT |
NFC Championship - Dallas Cowboys at Washington Redskins
January 22nd, 1983 at RFK Memorial Stadium...Temp 24, Clear Skies, Wind 6 mph
The Washington Redskins jumped on the Cowboys for a quick 14-0 lead. They then took a 21-0 lead at halftime and then coasted to a 27-7 win to capture the NFC crown and a birth in Super Bowl 17.
The Redskins scored touchdowns on their first two drives of the game and never looked back. They took the opening kick and cashed in when John Riggins scored on a six yard run. They forced Dallas to a three and out and after a poor punt by Danny White, took over at the Cowboys 36 yard line. Joe Theismann tossed a seven yard scoring pass to Charlie Brown and it was 14-0 Washington 10 minuets into the game. On the next Dallas possession White fumbled and Pete Cronan recovered on the Dallas 48 yard line. The Redskins again didn't waste such good field position and on first play of the second quarter Riggins scored his second touchdown of the game. The Cowboys turned the ball over again on their next drive when White was intercepted by Dexter Manley, but the Redskins failed to turn that into points. Just before halftime the Redskins looked like they would build onto their lead, but Theismann was intercepted by Anthony Dickerson at the Cowboys eight yard line. At the half it's still 21-0 Washington. After an exchange of punts to start the third quarter the Cowboys got on the scoreboard thanks to a three yard touchdown pass from White to Tony Dorsett. The Redskins answered by going on a long drive and getting points back when Mark Moseley kicked a 23 yard field goal at the start of the fourth quarter. As the Cowboys were trying to make it a game in the fourth quarter, White may have had the worst quarter of his career. He lost two more fumbles and threw another interception, killing any chances the Cowboys may have had. Moseley added another field goal and the final score ended at 27-7. The Redskins head to the Super Bowl. MVP: John Riggins (WAS): 107 yds rushing, 2 TD For Dallas: Danny White 12/25, 140 yds, TD, 2 INT, 3 FMB...Tony Dorsett 113 yds rushing...Drew Pearson 65 yds receiving...Everson Walls 10 tackles...Harvey Martin 2 sacks For Washington: Joe Theismann 15/18, 189 yds, TD. 2 INT...John Riggins 107 yds rushing, 2 TD...Art Monk 79 yds receiving |
Miami Dolphins v Washington Redskins
January 30th, 1983 at The Rose Bowl...Temp 62, Clear Skies, Wind 7 mph
Led by Andra Franklin's three touchdowns, the Miami Dolphins pulled away from the Washington Redskins in the second half to win Super Bowl 17 and claim their second championship. The Super Bowl win comes 10 years after they won Super Bowl 7 after my 1972 season.
Washington received the opening kick and went three and out, as did Miami immediately after. On the Redskins second possession Joe Washington caught a pass from Joe Theismann but fumbled at his own 22 yard line. Kim Bokamper recovered for Miami to set the Dolphins up with great field position. Tony Nathan found the end zone on a three yard run and Miami had a 7-0 lead. On Washington's next drive, AFC championship game MVP Gerald Small intercepted Theismann on first down and returned the pick 40 yards for a touchdown. Very quickly the Redskins found themselves down 14-0. Before the first quarter ended the Redskins did break through with a John Riggins three yard touchdown. Mark Moseley missed the extra point and after one quarter it's 14-6. Midway through the second quarter Andra Franklin scored for Miami on a 13 yard run to make it 21-6. On the Redskins next drive Don McNeal intercepted Theismann giving Miam a great chance to build upon their lead. However, David Woodley was intercepted by Dexter Manley at the Redskins 12 yard line to end the threat. Washington was able to build off that and get a Moseley 47 yd field goal before the half. Still, Miami takes a 21-9 lead into the locker room. The Redskins had no idea that would be the last points of the game for them. The Dolphins took the opening kick of the second half and Franklin again found paydirt on a two yard run to up their lead to 28-9. After a few punts back and forth, Uwe von Schamann kicked a 44 yard field goal to up the Dolphins lead to 31-9 heading to the final quarter. In the fourth quarter Theismann would be intercepted by both Blackwood brothers. First Lyle and then Glenn. After the interception by Glenn, Franklin would score his third touchdown of the game to put the Redskins away for good. Miami wins Super Bowl 17 38-9. MVP: Andra Franklin (MIA): 69 yds rushing, 3 TD, 1 rec for 3 yds For Miami: David Woodley 12/21, 136 yds, INT, 54 yds rushing...Franklin 69 yds rushing, 3 TD...Duriel Harris 66 yds rec For Washington: Joe Theismann 19/31, 160 yds, 4 INT...John Riggins 109 yds rushing, TD...Charlie Brown 54 yds receiving |
