AFC Championship - Miami Dolphins at Oakland Raiders
December 29, 1974 at Oakland Alameda County Coliseum...Temp 54, Cloudy...5 mph wind
After hosting four straight AFC Championship games, the Miami Dolphins decided to try something different...go on the road for one. This makes five straight appearances for Miami, but to this point they have only won once. Last year's Super Bowl Champions, Oakland looks to get back to the Super Bowl for a shot at a repeat.
The game started out slowly but then late in the first, Oakland's Ken Stabler connected with Cliff Branch on a long 45 yard touchdown pass giving Oakland a 7-0 lead. On the first play after the ensuing kick off, Miami's Bob Griese was intercepted by Skip Thomas at Miami's own 33 yard line. Thomas returned the pick down to the Dolphin's 18 yard line. Miami's defense held strong and forced the Raiders to settle for a 29 yard field goal by George Blanda. Raiders lead 10-0 after one quarter. Miami got the ball back and on the first play of the second quarter Griese threw his second interception of the game. Nemiah Wilson snagged his long pass attempt to Paul Warfield at the Raiders 33 yard line. The teams exchanged punts and Miami again had the ball back with 6:51 left in the half. Griese led the Dolphins down the field and he eventually hooked up with Nat Moore on a 27 yard touchdown pass. That made the score 10-7 with just 1:40 to play before halftime. Stabler and the Raiders were not content to head into the locker rooms with only a three point lead. They made their way into Miami territory when Stabler and Branch hooked up again. This time a 21 yard touchdown pass and the Raiders upped their lead to 17-7 heading to halftime. Miami received the second half kick and went three and out. The Raiders responded with another touchdown. Harold Hart capped a six play drive with an 11 yard TD run. Raiders now lead 24-7. Miami again went three and out and the Raiders again added points. Stabler throws his third TD pass of the game, this time to Biletnikoff and it's now a 31-7 lead. On the Doplphins next possession Griese threw his third interception of the game. Thomas does it for the second time and the Raiders are set up at the Miami 18 yard line. Charlie Smith eventually finds the end zone on a seven yard TD run and it's officially a blow out. 21 third quarter points have put the Raiders up 38-7. In the fourth quarter, Miami's Larry Csonka would score two touchdowns on runs of 24 and 9 yards. But it's nowhere near enough. The Raiders are again AFC Champions and they head to the Super Bowl for the second straight year, 38-21. MVP: Ken Stabler QB (Oakland) Passing: 209 yards, 3 TD, 137 Rating For Miami, Larry Csonka 15 carries, 82 yards, 2 TD...Bob Griese 12/29, 116 yards, TD, 3 INT, 3 SK...Nat Moore 4 catches for 54 yards. NFC Championship - Los Angeles Rams at Washington Redskins
December 29, 1974 at RFK Memorial Stadium...Temp 37, Clear...No Wind
Last year the Los Angeles Rams played at home in the NFC Championship, winning that game before losing to Oakland in the Super Bowl. To get back, they will have to go into Washington and beat the Redskins. The game ended up being a tight defensive struggle that couldn't be decided in regulation time.
It was the Redskins that got on the board first. Billy Kilmer's 10 yard TD pass to Jerry Smith put six points on the board. Mark Moseley came on for the extra point and missed it. 6-0 Redskins and you just knew that miss would loom large down the road. The Rams responded to the Redskins touchdown by going on a long scoring drive of their own. John Cappelletti found the end zone on a six yard touchdown run. David Ray came on for the point after and he missed it. Now both kickers will have misses looming over their teams. The game is tied 6-6 early in the second quarter. Later in the second, Moseley kicked a 42 yard field goal giving the Redskins a 9-6 lead. That would be the score at halftime. Neither team mounted much offense in the third quarter. The Redskins did manage to get in range for another field goal try by Moseley, but his 40 yard effort was wide left. The game remained 9-6 heading to the 4th quarter. The fourth quarter began with the Rams having the ball just inside Redskin territory. On 4th and seven from the Washington 42 they tried to surprise Washington with a fake punt. Mike Burke passed to John Cappelletti for only a yard and the Redskins took over. They went three and out and the Rams got the ball back with 12:02 left in the game. The Rams reached the Redskin 34 yard line with 7:01 to play. Facing a 4th and one, they went for the first down. Lawrence McCutcheon got the call and his three yard gain kept the drive alive. But only temporarily as three plays later the Rams were again faced with a 4th down but this time they needed 13 yards. They went for it again, but James Harris overthrew Lance Rentzel, turning the ball over to Washington with 4:27 left in the game. The Redskins could not pick up a single first down and were forced to punt back to the Rams. Jim Bertelsen had a nice return back to the Redskins 44 yard line. With 2:32 on the clock, the Rams had plenty of time to tie or win the game. Harris scrambled twice for only a yard. On third down he threw incomplete. Facing a 4th and nine, with the game on the line. He then connected with Harold Jackson for a gain of nine. They brought the sticks out to measure and Jackson just got enough. Harris then connected with Bob Klein down to the 21 yard line, but the Rams were called for a personal foul after the play. That backed them up to the 36 yard line. Again the Rams would face a 4th down. With only 33 seconds left in the game, they had a 4th and one from the 27 yard line. McCutcheon got the call and he gained four yards for the first down. With 24 seconds left Harris threw the ball away to stop the clock. Harris then took a shot to the endzone for Rentzel but it was too high. On 3rd down with just nine seconds left Ray came on for a 40 yard attempt to tie the game and send it to overtime. His kick was right down the middle. The game is tied 9-9 and heads to overtime. The Redskins won the toss and received to start the overtime. They went three and out The Rams followed with a punt giving the ball back to Washington. On 3rd and nine from their own 22 yard line Kilmer fumbled the snap. Jack Reynolds recovered for the Rams putting them in great shape to win the game. Three runs netted four yards and Ray was called on to win the game. His 35 yard attempt drifted to the right and outside the goal post. No good! The Rams were deflated and the Redskins were reborn. Kilmer led them back onto the field and then down the field. Kilmer connected with Moses Denson for 17 yards and Charly Taylor for 18 yards. With strong runs by Larry Smith in between, the Redskins reached the Rams 16 yard line. Moseley came on with his chance now to win it, and he did. The Redskins win the game 12-9 and head off to the Super Bowl to face the Oakland Raiders. MVP: Jerry Smith TE (Washington) Receiving 5 catches, 57 yards, TD For Los Angelels, Lawrence McCutcheon 18 carries, 78 yards...James Harris 16/31, 172 yards, 2 SK...Jack Snow 5 catches for 77 yards...Jack Reynolds 2 SK, Fmb Rec. Super Bowl IX - Oakland Raiders v Washington Redskins
January 12, 1975 at Tulane Stadium...Temp 62, Cloudy...No wind
Tulane Stadium in Louisiana is the site of Super Bowl IX. The Oakland Raiders look for back to back championships while the Washington Redskins look for their first.
It was the Redskins that were able to strike first. The Raiders received the opening kick off, but on their second play of the game, Ken Stabler's long pass for Cliff Branch was intercepted by Brig Owens. His return gave the Washington offense the ball at their own 44 yard line. Sonny Jurgensen came on and led Washington to paydirt in just five plays. Capping off the drive was a 19 yard TD pass to Charley Taylor. Les than five minutes into the game and Washington was up 7-0. The Raiders got the ball back and again on the second play Stabler was intercepted. Ken Stone picked him off and set up Jurgensen and the offense at the Raiders 36 yard line. The Raider defense held and Washington had to punt. The Raiders went three and out and Washington was able to drive for a 44 yard field goal by Mike Bragg making the score 10-0. Later in the first, Jack Tatum intercepted a Jurgensen pass giving the Raiders great field position at the Redskins 28 yard line. A 15 yard personal foul penalty moved them back and they had to settle for a 47 yard field goal attempt by George Blanda to start the 2nd quarter. His kick was no good and the Redskins maintained their ten point lead. Later in the 2nd, Washington found the end zone again. Larry Brown ran in from 11 yards out to make the score 17-0 in favor of the Redskins. On the ensuing drive the Raiders moved into Washington territory, but Stabler's third interception of the half ended the threat. It was Dave Robinson that did the honors this time. After getting the ball back, the Raiders again were able to call on Blanda for a field goal try. His 45 yard attempt was no good with 2:13 left in the half. Jurgensen brought the Redskins offense on the field and instead of running out the clock, they were looking for more points. Dan Conners of Oakland ended those thoughts when he intercepted Jurgensen with 1:36 to play in the half. Again the Raider offense took the field and again, for the fourth time, Stabler threw an interception. Ken Stone picked off his 2nd pass of the day and the Redskins took a 17-0 lead into the locker room. Washington got the ball to start the 2nd half, but went three and out. The Raiders then got their first points of the game on 23 yard field goal by Blanda to make it 17-3. There would be no more scoring in the 3rd quarter and the game moved into the final quarter. In the 4th, Marv Hubbard scored on a 14 yard run with 10:08 left to pull the Raiders within a touchdown 17-10. Washington and Oakland exchanged punts and the Redskins got the ball back with 4:22 left in the game. They were able to pick up one first down but then had to punt the ball at the two minute mark. Oakland took over at their own 24 yard line and 1:53 left on the clock. On 3rd and four, the Redskins were called for a pass interference penalty giving Oakland a first down at their 45 yard line. Stabler then hit Branch for a 14 yard gain. Stabler killed the clock with 1:10 now left in the game and the ball on the Washington 41 yard line. Washington was then penalized for being offside. A Stabler scramble and Hubbard three yard run made it first and ten at the Redskins 31 yard line with 43 seconds left. Stabler and Branch connected for 17 yards down to the 14 yard line. Branch got out of bounds to stop the clock with 33 seconds left. Stabler threw to Branch but he lost two yards. He didn't get out of bounds so Stabler killed the clock making it third and 12 with 16 seconds left. Stabler took the snap and dropped back again. The Redskins pressure forced him to scramble down the side line. He gained three yards, but worse for Oakland he was kept in bounds. The clock ran out and the Redskins were the Super Bowl Champions! MVP: Ken Stone S (Washington) Defense: 6 Tkl, 2 INT For Oakland, Clarence Davis 41 yards rushing, Marv Hubbard 55 yards rushing...Ken Stabler 21/36, 208 yards, 4 INT...Cliff Branch 7 Receptions for 77 yards, Fred Biletnikoff 6 Receptions for 44 yards...Jack Tatum 5 Tkl, INT, 2 PD...Dan Conners 5 Tkl, INT.
