AFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - Boston Patriots vs. Dallas Texans
Sunday, December 23, 1962 at The Cotton Bowl
The Dallas Texans rallied from a 19-7 deficit in the 4th quarter to stun the Boston Patriots 20-19 to win the 1962 AFL championship.
The Texans led the game at halftime 7-6. The only touchdown in the first half was scored on a Len Dawson 34 yard pass to Abner Haynes. In the 3rd quarter, Boston received the opening kick and went right down the field, taking the lead on a 4 yard touchdown pass from Babe Parilli to Tony Romeo. After forcing a Texan punt, Boston got the ball back and Gino Cappelletti kicked his third field goal of the game to increase the Patriots lead to 16-7.
Dallas got the ball back with just over 11 minutes to play in the game. In just five plays Dawson led them down the field and they found the end zone on a Dawson to Bill J. Miller six yard scoring strike. Tom Pennington missed the extra point and the score was now 19-13.
Boston got the ball back with just over 8 minutes left in the game. They went on a terrific drive trying to kill the clock and ice the game. Boston drove all the way down to the Dallas 10 yard line. With 2:08 left in the game, facing a 4th and one, they elected to go for the first down instead of attempting a field goal. Parillli tried a quarterback sneak but he lost two yards and fumbled, recovered by Paul Rochester of Dallas. The Texans take over possession with 1:59 to play on their own 12 yard line.
Dawson was incredible in this last possession. 25 yards to Miller, 12 yards to Fred Arbanas, 28 yards to Arbanas, a throw away to stop the clock and then a scramble for seven yards left them with third and three from the Boston 16 yard line and 50 seconds left in the game. With 4th and three and the game on the line, Dawson scrambled for 14 yards down to the Boston 2 yard line. He threw the ball away to stop the clock leaving second and goal with 20 seconds left. On second down Dawson scrambled again. He turned corner and dove into the end zone for a game tying touchdown. Pennington came on and kicked the extra point putting Dallas up 20-19 and only 10 seconds left in the game. After the kick off, Parilli's desperation heave was incomplete. The Dallas Texans are the champions.
