RBI singles by Jim Gantner and Paul Molitor off of KC reliever Dan Quisenberry in the 10th inning gave the Brewers a 7-5 win to take game one of the best of five series. Milwaukee had taken a 5-4 lead in the 7th with an RBI triple by Cecil Cooper and a sac fly by Gorman Thomas but Willie Aikens solo homer in the 8th off of Mike Caldwell tied the game at 5-5. Brewers catcher Charlie Moore was 5-5 with 2 runs and an RBI.

Royals starter Rich Gale pitched 8 innings of 1 hit shutout ball and Dan Quisenberry pitched a perfect 9th to complete a shutout victory for KC and even the series at 1-1. Amos Otis broke a scoreless tie in the 6th with a two run double. Hal McRae's sac fly in the 8th plated the other KC run. Larry Sorensen pitched a complete game for Milwaukee in defeat. Paul Molitor led off the game with a double for Milwaukee's only hit. Gale then retired 24 batters in a row and Quisenberry the next three in a row. George Brett had three hits for KC.

The Brewers came out swinging and led 10-1 after three innings. The Royals chipped away all game but the deficit was too much to over come. KC starter Paul Splittorff only lasted 1.2 innings giving up 8 earned runs. Bill Travers started for Milwaukee and was only slightly better allowing 4 earned runs in 4.2 innings. Willie Wilson and Frank White each had three hits for KC. Paul Molitor, Ben Oglivie and Dick Davis all had three hits for Milwaukee. Gorman Thomas hit two home runs and drove in four. Davis also had four RBIs.

Milwaukee wins series 3-1
Another slugfest and when the dust settled it was Milwaukee that came out on top 12-7 to take the series three games to one and move onto the World Series. KC scored three runs in the first and second. Milwaukee scored two in each for a 6-4 game after two. It was 7-6 with KC in front after four. In the fifth the Brewers went in front 9-7 with three runs off of reliever Steve Busby. A sac fly by Charlie Moore tied the game and Cecil Cooper's two run double put them in front. The Brewers added three more in the 7th on an RBI single by Cooper and a two run single by Robin Yount. Clint Hurdle had three hits and George Brett had four hits and a homer in the loss. Cooper was 5-5 with 4 RBI's and scored three times. Yount had 5 RBI's.
