NFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - Cleveland Browns vs Green Bay Packers
Sunday, January 2nd, 1966 at Lambeau Field
In a rematch of last year's championship game the Green Bay Packers defeated the Cleveland Browns for the second year in a row to win the NFL championship back to back.
The game was tight throughout, just as the previous season's. It was two field goals by Green Bay's Don Chandler in the 4th quarter that produced the winning score of 16-10. Chandler's field goal in the first quarter gave the Pack a 3-0 lead after one quarter. Jim Taylor ran in from one yard out in the second quarter to put Green Bay up 10-0. Jim Brown later scored for the Browns to make it 10-7. The Browns then had a great chance to tie the game before halftime. Green Bay's Bart Starr fumbled at his own 22 yd line and Bill Glass recovered for Cleveland. The Browns couldn't find the end zone and the Lou Groza missed a 20 yard kick that would have tied the game. Groza would connect on a 17 yd kick in the third quarter that tied the game at 10-10. It stayed that way into the 4th quarter. Browns QB Frank Ryan was intercepted by Willie Wood who returned the pick down to the Cleveland 17 yard line. Chandler kicked a 22 yd field goal to put the Pack up 13-10. On the next drive Ryan moved the Browns into field goal range but Ray Nitschke came up with a big play, intercepting Ryan at the Pack 22 yd line. The Packers went down the field and Chandler kicked a 9 yd field goal to make it 16-10 with just over five mineuts left. After an exchange of punts, the Browns got the ball back one last time with 2:44 to play. They failed to reach mid field before turning the ball over on downs.
