AFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - Buffalo Bills vs San Diego Chargers
Sunday, December 26, 1964 at War Memorial Stadium
Keith Lincoln's 28 yard field goal with under two minutes to play in the game gave the San Diego Chargers a 24-23 victory in the AFL Championship game. The Chargers win back to back titles in thrilling fashion two years in a row.
The Chargers took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter via a John Hadl to Paul Lowe 4 yard touchdown pass. It didn't take long for the Bills to respond as on the first play of their next drive Joe Auer ran 78 yards for a game tying touchdown. Early in the second quarter Pete Gogolak kicked a 34 yard field goal to put the Bills up 10-7. Later in the quarter Hadl threw his second touchdown pass of the game, this one to Don Norton, to put the Chargers up 14-10. That would be the score at halftime.
The Bills received the second half kick off and they turned that into points as Gogolak kicked his second field goal to make it 14-13. That would be the only scoring in the third quarter.
On the first play of the fourth quarter Hadl threw his third touchdown pass of the game, this time to Lance Alworth, and the Chargers now were up 21-13. With just over eight minutes to play in the game Jack Kemp threw a scoring strike to Elbert Dubenion. Gogolak's extra point pulled the Bills again to within one point at 21-20. On the second play of the Chargers next drive Norton fumbled after catching a pass and Hagood Clarke recovered for Buffalo at the Chargers 42 yard line.
The Bills moved the ball down to the Chargers two yard line. On fourth and goal they sent in Gogolak for a short nine yard field goal attempt. His kick was good and with 3:14 to play, the Bills had a 23-21 lead.
That set the stage for John Hadl and the Chargers offense. After a very good kick return by Speedy Duncan, the Chargers were able to get down to the Bills 21 yard line. Keith Lincoln was called on and he drilled the 28 yard field goal to make it 24-23. Buffalo got the ball back with just over a minute and a half to play, but they couldn't get past their own 40 yard line before time ran out.
